To reach Lake Como by train is generally a comfortable experience with a number of different options available.
That said, it works best if your accommodation is in one of the small number of towns around the lake that has its own train station. The two major cities of Como and Lecco each have a train station but there are more stations on the eastern side than there are over on the western side of the lake. From Lecco at the south-eastern corner of the lake you can take trains up the coast to Colico with stops on the way at a number of stations including Mandello del Lario, Varenna and Bellano. |
Across on the other side of the lake it's only Como that has its own train station, so unless you're staying overnight in Como itself, you then need to use an alternative form of transport such as a ferry, bus, taxi or pre-booked private transfer.
